Why would you want to use low power and a weak signal for your ham radio instead of high power and a strong signal? Putting as little as possible between yourself and the station at the other end and still making the contact takes skill. Build up a little experience and then give QRP a try.

Why do some hams choose to operate QRP? How can I operate QRP? These are good questions, and all are worth asking.
My main activity has been based on radio circuit design and maintenance and microcontroller programming. I started with the distribution of ham radio kits in It has been my true passion since I was very young.
Amateur radio has a lot of different sub-disciplines, ranging from volunteering for public service gigs to contesting, the closest thing the hobby has to a full-contact sport. With QRP you can literally talk with someone across the planet on less power than it takes to run a night-light using a radio you built in an Altoids tin. QRP takes its name from the Q-codes developed as shorthand by early Morse operators. Generally, any radio capable of transmitting at 5 watts or less would be considered a QRP rig, although some argue for anything below 10 watts.
I built this about six months ago, and have had a lot of fun with it. Mods include a turn pot and a Freq-Mite. Everything works as it should, power out is about 2.
Even many radio amateurs whose licenses enable them to use the full legal power con often prefer QRP operation as it gives them a great sense of satisfaction and provides a whole new world of challenges in terms of amateur radio operating as well as building the equipment. In view of the enjoyment that QRP operation provides a considerable number of radio amateurs only operate QRP, while others may have high power stations, but also operate in a QRP mode at other times to provide another dimension to their amateur radio operation. Essentially amateur radio QRP operation can be defined as operating with low power.
